FAQ
The questions we get most often. The deeper "how" lives in the topic-specific docs (getting started, voice, scales, etc.); this is the quick-answer reference.
Product & trust
Will my taxes be calculated correctly?
Yes. We use Shopify Draft Order custom line items with explicit pricing — the canonical Shopify pattern. Tax flags inherit from the parent product, exactly as Shopify designed it. This is precisely the thing Weyify gets wrong (they create a brand-new product variant per weighing); we don't do that, ever. See billing §6 for the mechanic.
Does it really work with DYMO postal scales?
Yes — over WebHID. We support DYMO M5/M10/M25 (postal), generic USB HID retail scales (Adam, NCR, Stamps.com), and Bluetooth scales (Android only — iPad Safari doesn't expose Web Bluetooth). Filljoy explicitly says it can't do DYMO; we took it as a marketing brief. Full list at scales.
What hardware do I need?
An iPad or Android tablet (10–13″) on the counter, a scale, and your existing Shopify POS hardware (cash drawer, receipt printer, card terminal). That's it. No new register, no proprietary scale, no separate computer. Snaptare runs as a PWA in Safari/Chrome.
Migration & setup
Can I migrate from Filljoy without losing data?
Yes. Your products, prices, taxes, and inventory live in Shopify, not in your current sell-by-weight app. We connect, read your catalog over the Admin GraphQL API, build the local index, and you're ready at the till. Tare presets we'll re-create together during onboarding (5–10 minutes).
How long does setup take?
Under 10 minutes if your Shopify catalog is already populated. Tag your bulk products with snaptare, optionally mark canonical variants, optionally set per-variant price_unit metafields, ring up a test sale. Step-by-step at getting started.
Do I need to set anything up in Shopify before installing?
Just have your products in Shopify with prices set. Snaptare reads the catalog from there. The only Snaptare-specific Shopify changes are: a snaptare tag on the products you sell at the till, and (optional) two metafields per variant for canonical/price-unit overrides.
Languages, voice, AI
What languages does the voice recognition support?
French and English at launch — both with localized number, unit, and product-name handling (so "deux cents grammes" and "two hundred grams" both work). Spanish on the post-launch roadmap. See voice commands.
How does the AI tare work? Is my customer's photo sent to a server?
The vision model runs entirely on the tablet — about 50 MB, downloaded once at install. Customer photos are processed locally and discarded immediately. They never leave the device. Container fingerprints (for regulars who bring the same jar weekly) are stored in your local IndexedDB, encrypted at rest. Optional, opt-in per customer. See tare & containers.
Can I switch the language per customer (FR-speaking regulars vs. EN-speaking ones)?
The language toggle in the topbar flips the entire UI between EN and FR with a single tap. Your team can switch on the fly between customers. The voice recognizer's language follows the UI setting.
Reliability & offline
What actually happens when my wifi goes down?
Nothing visible. The catalog is local. Drafts are local. Tax calc is local. Receipts print. Inventory continues to draw down in the local store. Behind the scenes, the sync queue holds your finalized orders. When the wifi returns, the queue flushes to Shopify in the background — every order in the right place, with the right tax.
If the tablet crashes, do I lose in-progress carts?
No. Carts persist in IndexedDB on the device. Closing and reopening the app brings them back exactly as they were — including the active product, the current weight, and the tare preset.
What happens if Shopify is down?
Same as if your wifi is down: the till keeps working. When Shopify is back, the queue drains and orders flush. We've designed for the assumption that the network — Shopify or local — is unreliable in real shops.
Pricing & billing
How does pricing work?
Three tiers: Starter $9.99/mo (1 location), Pro $19.99/mo (3 locations), Enterprise $39.99/mo (5+ locations, $5/extra). 14-day free trial, no credit card required to start. All tiers include all features — we don't paywall the moat. Full table at pricing & billing.
What's the Founder Circle?
The first 100 Snaptare merchants get a one-time refund of the first month's subscription in exchange for a recorded 20-minute feedback call. First-come, first-served. Apply via the in-app onboarding banner or email [email protected] with subject "Founder Circle".
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. Uninstall from your Shopify admin. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. We don't pro-rate refunds for partial months unless your jurisdiction requires it. On uninstall, your data is hard-deleted from our backend within 7 days (see privacy §7).
Launch & status
When does Snaptare launch?
Public launch on the Shopify App Store in 2026. Sign up for early access at the bottom of the home page — we're onboarding a small Founder Circle group first.
Is there an Android app? An iOS native app?
Snaptare is a Progressive Web App. You install it from your tablet's browser → "Add to Home Screen", and after that it opens like a native app — no browser chrome, full-screen, offline-safe. We don't ship App Store / Play Store native apps; the PWA architecture is what gives us the offline mode and the universal hardware support (USB HID, Bluetooth, camera).
Is Snaptare open source?
No, Snaptare is proprietary. The architectural patterns (local-first PWA, on-device embeddings, custom-line-item draft orders) are documented in our docs and on the marketing site so other developers can learn from them. The application code itself stays closed.
