Getting started
Install Snaptare, point it at your catalog, ring up your first sale. Under ten minutes if your Shopify products are already populated.

1. Install Snaptare from the Shopify App Store
Search "Snaptare" on the Shopify App Store, click Add app, and approve the requested permissions in your Shopify admin. The app needs the following scopes to work:
read_products,write_products— read your catalog and update tags during setup.read_draft_orders,write_draft_orders— create and finalize the at-the-till draft orders.read_customers— search customers to attach a regular to a sale (results never cached on our side; see privacy §3).read_locations,read_inventory,write_inventory— multi-location support and inventory drawdown.
Approval flips the app on. Snaptare immediately fetches your catalog (in the background) and starts indexing it on the tablet. You'll see a progress bar in the tablet app.
2. Tag the products you sell at the till
Snaptare only shows products with the snaptare tag at the till. This keeps online-only products out.
- Go to Shopify Admin → Products.
- Filter to the products you sell at the counter (your bulk grains, spices, oils, soaps, whatever).
- Select all → Bulk edit → add tag
snaptare.
The tablet picks up new tags within a few seconds via Shopify's products/update webhook. Pull-to-refresh in the catalog if you don't want to wait.
Settings → Catalog → Product tag to bulk-pos, vrac, or anything else.3. Pick which variant to expose at the till
If you have multi-variant bulk products (Adzuki Beans 100 g / 250 g / 500 g / 1 kg), you don't want all four cluttering the grid — just the one used as your bulk reference (typically the smallest, e.g. 100 g).
- Open a product → click into the variant you want exposed.
- Scroll to Metafields → add metafield with namespace
snaptare, keycanonical, type Boolean, valuetrue. - Save.
If you don't mark anything: every variant shows up. That's fine for products with a single variant — common for one-off pre-packaged items like jars of honey.
4. Set the price unit per variant (optional)
By default Snaptare assumes $X / kg. Override per-variant when something is priced differently. Add a metafield with namespace snaptare, key price_unit, value one of:
kg·g·lb·oz— weight (default:kg)m·cm·in·ft·yd— length (fabric, rope)l·ml·gal·floz— volume (oils, liquids)m2·ft2— areaeach— sold per piece (jars, bottles, soap bars). Switches the till to a quantity stepper instead of weight.
5. Ring up your first sale
Open Snaptare on your tablet. Three steps to a sale:
- Find the product. Tap, type, or hold the mic and say it (e.g. "almonds, six hundred grams").
- Read the weight. Either let the connected scale push it, or type it in grams on the number pad.
- Take payment. Tap Take payment → cash or manual card. Snaptare creates a Shopify draft order with a custom line item, finalizes it, drains inventory, and prints a receipt.
Multiple customers? Tap + New cart and start a second one. Swipe to switch between them. The active cart glows.
6. Set up the tablet for daily use
- Add to home screen. Visit app.snaptare.app in Safari (iPad) or Chrome (Android) → "Add to Home Screen". The app then opens in full-screen with no browser chrome.
- Sign in. Connect to your Shopify store from Snaptare's first-run screen. The token is stored on the device and refreshed automatically.
- Big-font mode. If your team finds text small, toggle Settings → Bigger text for a bumped base size on every screen.
- Pin the orientation. Lock the tablet to landscape (iPad) or portrait (your call) so the layout doesn't flip when staff move it around.
- Disable auto-lock. Set the screen to never sleep while plugged in. Snaptare's offline mode handles wifi drops; you don't want the screen turning off mid-customer.
